Look It Up

Why you would use it

A printed drawing is an instrument or a picture, and which one it’s has to be stated. Somebody puts a scale rule on a 1:50 print and reads a dimension that appears as a number nowhere on the sheet — so a print that claims a scale has to be that scale.

For example

What to do

  1. File › Print.
  2. Pick the paper, and whether it is to scale or fitted.
  3. In the printer dialog, set Scale to 100% or Actual size.

Going further

It’s NEVER SHRUNK TO FIT BEHIND YOUR BACK. If the drawing won’t go on that paper at that scale it says so, tells you how far over it is, and offers a scale or a paper size that would work — it doesn’t quietly rescale and keep the label. A fitted print reports the scale it landed on so nobody measures off it by accident, and a page with no calibration can’t be printed to scale at all. The one thing outside its control is the printer dialog itself, which usually defaults to shrinking the page: set it to 100% or the sheet won’t be the scale it says.
