Use it with a finger or a pen (touch mode)
Bigger controls, finger gestures, and a loupe for placing points exactly, for a tablet or any touched screen.
Touch mode makes the program comfortable to use with a finger, on a tablet or any touched screen. Turn it on from View, Switch to touch mode (recommended for tablets), or in Settings, Touch. On a tablet it’s offered to you once, and it’s never switched on behind your back.
What changes
- Every control is at least 44 pixels, the size a fingertip (and a gloved one) can press without hitting its neighbour.
- The tools sit in two columns on the left, and the panels float over the drawing one at a time instead of squeezing it, so the drawing keeps the screen.
- A Dato Room's lobby sits along the bottom where a thumb reaches it, with the drawing still in view above it.
- A mouse still works, and shows a hand rather than an arrow. Your drawing, scale and marks are never touched by switching.
Your fingers on the drawing
- Two fingers pinch to zoom and slide to pan, with any tool in hand.
- To place a point (a length, an area, a count), press and slide: a loupe above your finger shows the exact spot and what it will snap to, and the point goes down where you lift. Press, aim, lift.
- To draw a line, a box or a freehand mark, drag. If a second finger lands partway, the stroke is dropped, so a pinch never leaves ink.
- One finger on empty paper pans the sheet, and it carries on a moment when you let go. A tap selects; a drag on a mark moves it.
- Hold a finger still for the menu a right-click would give.
- Done and Cancel appear at the bottom while a shape with several points is in hand, because there’s no right-click to finish it with.
- A quick tap with two fingers undoes the last step. Turn it off in Settings, Touch, if it gets in your way.
With a pen
An Apple Pencil or another pen draws like a mouse that can hover, so the snap and the loupe show before it touches. Freehand strokes keep every sample the screen took, so a quick line is smooth. With the pen in use, the side of your hand resting on the screen is ignored (Settings, Touch turns that off).
Joining a room from a tablet
Open the invite link, or choose Join with a link and press Paste from clipboard. To invite someone from a tablet, Share invite opens the device's own share sheet (Messages, Mail, AirDrop). A view-only invite is for somebody who only needs to look at the drawing, on site or in the office.
