Make clicks land exactly on the drawing

How snapping works, when to turn it off, and how to hold a line straight.

Snapping makes your clicks land on something real. In this order: the ends and middles of your own measurements, then a corner of the drawing, a place where two of its lines cross, the middle of a line, and last the nearest point on a line. A click that lands two points out is invisible on screen and still in the bill, which is why snapping is on by default.

  • Move the pointer near a corner and a marker appears. Click and the point goes exactly there.
  • Hold Shift to hold a line exactly horizontal, vertical or 45°. It still snaps, but only to what lies on that straight run: the end slides along the line to the corner or line it meets, and never leaves the straight.
  • Click Snap in the status bar to turn snapping off, for instance when you are tracing a curve.
  1. Start a measurement and move the pointer towards a corner. A marker shows what it will land on.
  2. Click while the marker is showing.
  3. To place a point somewhere that isn’t on the drawing, click Snap in the status bar first, or hold Shift to constrain it.
