Why you would use it

For the shapes buildings actually are: an L, a hip, a bay with a corner taken out of it.

Going further

Measure each roof section separately and put them all in one take-off group. The group adds them up, applies the waste, and gives you the figure you actually order against.

If you already use another program

In a CAD program: The area of a closed polyline or a hatch, but traced on a flat drawing at its calibrated scale.

In a building-model program: An area or a room: here you trace it on the sheet, and it isn’t tied to any model.

In a PDF markup program: A polygon area measurement; a cutout takes an opening out of it.
