Why you would use it
A panel pinned to the side is in the way as often as it’s useful. On a wide screen the properties are better beside the detail you’re looking at; on a laptop they’re better out of the way entirely.
For example
What to do
- Drag the strip along the top of a panel and it comes away under the pointer.
- Drop it on an edge of the window to dock it there, or leave it floating where it suits you.
- Right-click, Panels, or Settings, Appearance, choose a place without dragging at all.
- Lock the panels when you are happy and nothing can be knocked out of place.
Going further
An undocked panel keeps whatever was showing in it — the tab, the filter, where a list was scrolled — because it’s the same panel, moved, not a copy. It can’t be dragged off screen, and Settings has a Put every panel back.
